THE EAGLE THEATER

The Eagle Theater was located at 130 Hudson Avenue and was run out of the Catholic Union building, which gave the theater its unique, castle-like look. It was, first and foremost, a movie house, showing silent films. This all changed when the theater was purchased by Abe Stone sometime in 1927. Stone was a man who had cut his teeth in the theater business under tutelage of previous movie theater pioneers in Albany, having worked with both Emil Deiches and Samuel Suckno directly earlier in his career.

The Eagle Theater reopened on January 5, 1938, being redubbed the New Eagle Theater. The theater had been fully renovated for sound pictures in addition to a more contemporary, Art Deco facelift to its façade. Its bill for the grand reopening that evening was Prisoner of Zenda and Make a Wish. The New Eagle was a theater with optimal sound features in mind, boasting of its modern acoustics and a “Western Electric Wide Range Sound System,” which was the first of its kind in Albany.262

By the late 1940s, things were not looking good for the Eagle Theater. The theater, then owned by the Capital City Theater Corporation, lost a lawsuit against a woman who fell backward out of a broken seat, injuring her head and back on February 18, 1948. She was awarded $1,800 for her injuries.263 Coincidentally, the theater would be sold by the City Theater Corporation just four months later on April 1, 1951, in an unrelated matter, claiming that it was pushed into selling the theater by other theater companies in the area.264 The Eagle continued until some point in the late 1950s, when it ceased operations.
